Three resident artists with grants from the Madrid City Council "squatted" the Residencia de Estudiantes: Pedro Morales Elipe, a fellow during the 1989-92 academic years, painted the murals Interiores modernos en el comedor in the dining room; Josefa Herrera Pellicer, a fellow from 1990-1992, exhibited her small paintings in the hall, and Francisco Díaz Baena, fellow in 1991-1992, put his installation Con las manos se forman las palabras in the auditorium.
