The Instituto de Filosofía del Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales del CSIC, the Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones Culturales and the Consejería de Educación de la Comunidad de Madrid, with the collaboration of the Residencia de Estudiantes, organized this exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of José Luis L. Aranguren's birth (Avila, June 9, 1909- Madrid, April 17, 1996)

 

Aranguren: filosofía en la vida, vida en la filosofía aims to disseminate Aranguren's significance as a philosopher and as a key figure during a difficult period when Spain went through radical and irreversible changes. It is a tribute to a philosopher who opened up Spanish cultural thought and shock out the moral and political conscience of the time.

 

The exhibition is divided into four sections:"Tradición y crítica (1945-1955)", "Nuevos espacios para la filosofía (1956-1965)", "Pensamiento itinerante (1966-1976)" and "El oficio del intelectual (de 1976 en adelante)". It follows Aranguren's journey from the 40s, as an intellectual concerned with religious, existential issues, through the mid-50s, when he became professor of Ethics at the University of Madrid, the 60s when he played a very critical role in the cultural and social establishment, and up to the period after Franco's death, when he achieved national preeminence. The exhibition's underlying theme is Aranguren's constant philosophical concerns: religion, ethics and politics.
