ART INSTALLATIONS IN THE GARDENS OF THE RESIDENCIA DE ESTUDIANTES

1. JUAN MANUEL ARTERO Memoria del agua (The Water Remembers)
Sound installation

Or what if the creek that runs in the little channel through the garden of the Residencia de Estudiantes had been able to preserve the sounds, voices, music that have inhabited the house. And now, after a hundred years, the creek flips them open into the air. By placing speakers along the old course of the water, and using the metaphor of history as a river, the public will hear an acoustic power that, starting on Pinar Street, traces a journey through the sound events of the last hundred years during which the Residencia has become a cultural center of international relevance.

Composer born in Madrid in 1969. Former fellow of the Madrid City Council at the Residencia de Estudiantes (2000-2002).

2. DANIEL SILVO Braille

Installation

"Omnes lineis circumducta umbra hominis" and "La photo de l'être disparu comme vient toucher me differen les rayons d'une étoile. " The first quotation comes from Naturalis historiae, book XXXV, a work by Pliny the Elder. The second one is from Roland Barthes' Camera Lucida. Both texts refer to the role of sunlight in Art. Pliny explains the birth of drawing to trace a line along the contour of the shadow of the sitter. Barthes, in a poetic form, speaks of the light that we perceive of an object or a subject from the past in the photograph.

In this installation, the solar light is projected onto the floor, drawing on it the text in Braille.

3. ANTONIO R. MONTESINOS Nerium Oleander (Oleanders)

Installation

The work consists of a series of banners placed in a semi regular fashion. It attempts to appeal to the formal properties of the plantation and the birth of plant species in the gardens of the Residencia de Estudiantes. It pretends to be seen as a naive exercise to mark the intangible heritage that these gardens store, making an impossible display of moments lived here and the role of the Residencia as a "breeding ground" since it was built on the Poplar Hill.

Artist born in Ronda (Malaga) in 1979. Former fellow of Madrid City Council at the Residencia de Estudiantes (2009-2010).

4. MARÍA ANDUEZA Situación de bóveda (From the top)

Sound installation

A cross-reference frame between the context and the art created specifically for the installation takes shape in the natural architecture that the branches of a tree define. Without magnifying this frame or making it an object to be seen, these references coexist with the interior space of this architecture in an attempt to capture the distracted attention and bring it back to the present moment.

Research Artist born in Madrid in 1978. Former fellow of the Residencia de Estudiantes (2008-2010).

5. SANDRA REIN Tejido por la Casa (Woven by the House)

Collage

This piece is made of more than five hundred calendars that the Residencia de Estudiantes uses to disseminate its activities. The artist, a contributor to the cultural activity of the house, made this installation as a tribute to the effort and enthusiasm of those people committed to the work undertaken by the Residencia for a hundred years.

In Sandra Rein's words: " All over the tables of my colleagues one can see calendars, notes of color that spring with no apparent effort, but where a great deal of energy is concentrated. The installation is designed as an unfinished fabric with daily work and the possibility to continue it. Woven with the work of all. Woven by the House."

Artist born in Seville (1968).She exhibits at the Egam Gallery. She currently works at the Residencia de Estudiantes.
