A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN Federico García Lorca at the Residencia de Estudiantes 1919-1936
Virginia Woolf's famous quote "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction" fits Federico García Lorca's experience at the Residencia de Estudiantes like a glove. During his stay, that marked his whole life, he went from occupying the rooms for students to becoming a lecturer at the "refined salon" where he claimed to have listened to "around a thousand lectures" before.
This exhibition (of manuscripts, prints, photographs, drawings, plastic work and objects, most of them from the archives of the Fundación Federico García Lorca, of the Residencia de Estudiantes and of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía) is divided into four parts:
1. The presentation of a general approach to the characteristics of the Residencia de Estudiantes, with leaflets, the streamer, the head of the blonde athlete that inspired the design of its emblem, and Impresiones y Paisajes (Impressions and Landscapes), the book that young Federico had taken with him, written in Granada. 2. A first stage based on Federico García Lorca's timeline as a resident. It goes from 1919 to 1925 and it shows the necessity for and defence of a room of one's own in very expressive letters after the failure of El maleficio de la mariposa (The Butterfly's evil spell) (1920) and, once he conquered permanence from 1923, the interaction with other rooms and with the city, through the Orden de Toledo invented by Buñuel. He also defends the production of poems and drawings. All in all, the exhibition attempts to reflect the training of the intellectual and artistic youth, "the love, the friendship or the fencing" that united or separated them. 3. The stage from 1926 to 1928, marked by the apparition of the magazine Residencia in 1926. It reflects the moment in which the educational training of the previous years multiplied its results in several fields, degrees and levels, from the poetic games, such as the "anaglifos" and the "putrefactos" (some were made by Pepín Bello and, of course, by Dalí, some of whose oil paintings Federico had in his room and are also exhibited here), to the consecutive successes of the drawing exhibition at the Dalmáu Gallery in Barcelona, Mariana Pineda, Canciones and, above all, the Romancero gitano. This part is closed by the programme of the conference on lullabies given by Lorca at the Residencia on December 13th 1928, accompanied by his piano. 4. Lastly, the period from 1929 to 1936, that attends to a series of interventions at the Residencia already from the outside, among which stand out the rehearsals and preparation of the university theatre La Barraca, made up of students of Humanities and Architecture (the unique blue jumpsuit of the male components of the group, many of them residents, is shown), as well as different memories that go with the recollection of Lorca at this institution until the year 1936, when he recalls the book on the language of the flowers, shown to him by José Moreno Villa, and its importance when composing Doña Rosita la Soltera (Doña Rosita the Spinster).
