JOSÉ MORENO VILLA. OILS AND DRAWINGS (1926-1951)

This exhibition about José Moreno Villa (Málaga, 1887- Mexico City, 1955) was produced by the Residencia de Estudiantes with its own collection. It offers a visual and graphical tour around the figure and work of a unique character within the diverse literary and artistic movements that took place in Spain during the first third of the 20th century. At the same time, it brings us closer to the charismatic Spanish intellectual that achieved his integration into the Mexican culture world when he started a long and final exile.

Through oil paintings, drawings, photographs, manuscripts, books and other documents this exhibition introduces the audience to the different stages of a man who was able to combine study with creation. He achieved this through his work as an art historian at the Centre for Historical Studies of Madrid or by leading the Archive of the Royal Palace, and through practicing and popularizing the new artistic trends of the European avant-garde, both in his pictorial work and in his writings. We will progressively get to know a poet who was able to break with the modernist tradition and pave the way for the new Spanish poetry, the so-called Generación del 27, into which he himself would finally assimilate. Moreover, we will find a man who, when he lived at the Residencia de Estudiantes of Madrid as a tutor and assistant director, was able to establish a close friendship with the most notable members of the new generation — Luis Buñuel, Salvador Dalí or Federico García Lorca, among others—, -with whom he participated in the multiple cultural adventures that gave the name to the period of the Edad de Plata de la cultura española (the Silver Age of Spanish Culture).

However, this exhibition also wants to show the new intellectual and artistic paths he developed during his exile, and which finally made him a person who was completely integrated in the cultural life of Mexico at the time, a country in which he is still remembered. Moreno Villa was incidentally the first Spanish exile who was invited to live in Mexico by the government of general Lázaro Cárdenas. Thus he became in 1938 one of the eight founding members of La Casa de España en México. This became a model institution where Spanish intellectuals who were beginning to arrive to the country started to work, and which would become El Colegio de México in 1940. Moreno Villa was one of its founding members and would work there until the end of his life. This is nowadays one of the most prestigious educational organizations of America.
