This exhibition reconstructed the intellectual biography of architect Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta (Vigo, 1877-Madrid, 1941), the author, together with Francisco Javier Luque, of the Residencia de Estudiantes' headquarters. It started with Flórez's education and training, with special attention to his fellowship in Rome, and his school-building period, when he put into practice the innovative ideas born in the Institución Libre de Enseñanza. It followed him during his directorship of the Oficina Técnica de Construcciones Escolares, Ministerio de Instrucción Pública, where he promoted the construction of numerous schools throughout Spain. He was also a dedicated teacher of Architecture.
This show was a major contribution towards a better understanding of this architect and his fruitful career. In spite of their historical significance, his contributions had not yet been appreciated for their true value. The display of the exhibition in one of pavilions built by Flórez added even more value, connecting the content to the space in which it was exhibited. The Flórez family was crucial in making this exhibition possible. His daughter, María Paz Flórez Gallegos, and the heirs of her deceased sister Josefa and her brother Antonio (the Villalba and Flórez Laffon families), generously lent a large number of items for the exhibition.
