This exhibition brings together a selection of current photographs of some of the institutions, places and landscapes that form the Spanish geography of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, taken by a group of photographers (Luis Asín, Luis Fernández, Ferran Freixa, Ana Muller, Eduardo Sánchez, Esther Santás and Miguel Zavala) who were invited to participate in this project organized by the Fundación Francisco Giner de los Ríos.
The subjects of these authors' cameras were the building of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza in Madrid (seat of the Fundación Francisco Giner de los Ríos), the 'cottage' of the Institución in the Sierra de Guadarrama, Fundación Sierra-Pambley —which meant the expansion of the work of the Institución to León- which has the centres of León, Hospital de Órbigo and Villablino, as well as the Instituto Internacional in Spain, the Residencia de Estudiantes, the Residencia de Señoritas (seat of the current Fundación Ortega-Marañón) and the Instituto-Escuela (today Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria and Colegio Público Ramiro de Maeztu), all of them located in Madrid.
The project is aimed to stimulate the connection between cultural heritage and landscape, and the contemporary creation with photographs, departing from the concept of "site of memory", coined by Pierre Nora as "an abstract notion, purely symbolic, destined to unravel the recalling dimension of the objects that can be material, and above all, immaterial," that is, emerging from the world of ideas.
