The exhibition explored the role of science and technology in the modernization of Spanish society throughout the 20th century. It was a century with breakdowns and adverse circumstances, but the will to improve science was demonstrated time and time again.
The exhibition proposed a positive look at Spain's scientific past as the basis for understanding her current success in technological research and development. Thanks to the collaboration of numerous entities, the exhibition brought together more than 200 original items, some never exhibited before, grouped into thematic and chronological sections. They were displayed on panels introducing the topics and the biographical profiles of the main figures featured in the exhibition. The texts were short and written in a simple language free of scientific jargon. They were illustrated with carefully selected, enlarged photographic reproductions.
The show also had audiovisual and interactive elements to enhance its educational purpose. Un siglo de ciencia en España journeyed through this field, with scientists (Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Leonardo Torres Quevedo, Severo Ochoa, and others less well known); institutions (the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios, the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, and the universities); and content (the neuron, the atom, biodiversity). The exhibition was divided into nine chronological and thematic sections, with cross references showing that in order to understand the present and future scientific developments, it is necessary to know its past.
