This exhibition paid tribute to Manuel de Falla on the 50th anniversary of his death and commemorated the 100th anniversary of painter Manuel Ángeles Ortiz's birth, coinciding with his retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro Arte Reina Sofia. The exhibition brought together the works that resulted from the collaboration between the composer from Granada, the painter from Jaén, and two other Spanish artists -Hermenegildo Lanz and Hernando Viñes- for the staging of El retablo de maese Pedro, in Paris, 1923. The work, commissioned by the Princess de Polignac, premiered on June 25, 1923, with the Wladimir Goldschmann's orquestra conducted by Falla, with Wanda Landowska at the harpsichord. For the design of the stage, the composer sought the help of three prominent artists, virtually unknown at that time: Manuel Ángeles Ortiz, who made the curtain and constructed the front of the portable stage, and worked together with Hernando Viñes in designing the sketches and sets. Hermenegildo Lanz made the heads of the puppets. There were 57 characters, set designs, proscenium arches and flat figures, the majority of them made by Manuel Ángeles Ortiz, with contributions from Hernando Viñes and Hermenegildo Lanz. Other original documents showed the events surrounding the performances in other cities, and the collaboration that emerged among the artists.
