The Residencia is well known as the house where people like with Dalí, Lorca and Buñuel lived and made friends and by being a place where Einstein, Madame Curie and Le Corbusier presented their theories. The success of the Residencia was due to the institution's understanding of education as an integral and active process. The peculiar atmosphere that characterized the place, the talent of the main characters who lived in it and, above all, the intellectual and moral project that supported it, all ensured that between 1910 and 1939 the Residencia was one of the main centers for the scientific and educational modernization of Spain.
Today, its restored buildings annually host over 3,000 researchers and creators from all over the world, plus a group of young people who benefit from the scholarship program. The Residencia holds exhibitions, poetry readings, concerts, lectures and conferences, and its Documentation Centre boasts an unique set of archival funds that specialize in intellectual history from the first third of 20th century Spain, mainly focused on the history of the Residencia de Estudiantes, the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios, and the Institución Libre de Enseñanza. The archives have served as base for research of many different projects that have been published.
Today, the Residencia, that was and remains being the home of Dalí, Lorca and Buñuel, continues to be dedicated to creativity. The institution where Einstein presented his theory of relativity in Spain still welcome the latest trends in physics or biology, maintaining its tradition of innovation. At the Residencia one can still hear the newest in music, poetry... and it is there where it is being created. A garden in the core of Madrid where oleanders planted by Juan Ramón Jiméne survive and where, today, we can hear the young voices of the future of a culture. The exhibition "La Residencia de Estudiantes", organized by the Residencia de Estudiantes with cooperation from Acción Cultural Española and the Fundación Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Is part of the program of activities dedicated to commemorating the centenary of the Residencia. The Museum of León and the Sierra Pambley Foundation have organized the exhibition's tour in León with the sponsorship of LVEF and SEIASA.
