TRASPASAR FRONTERAS
Un siglo de intercambio científico entre España y Alemania

Crossing borders. 100 Years of Scientific Collaboration between Spain and Germany

This exhibition, organized by the Vicepresidencia Adjunta de Organización y Cultura Científica del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) offers an overview of the development of the Spanish- German scientific relations during the last 100 years.

The first section explores the background of those contacts in the 19th century with a double focus: the Spanish aproach to Germany (The Institución Libre de Enseñanza, the "krausismo," Sánz del Río's visit to Germany, and Ramón y Cajal's relation with that country), and the interest in Germany about "lo español," as shown by the Humboldt brothers and other scientists who visited Spain, and the Spanish themes in some of Goethe o Schiller's works. The second section deals with the scientific regeneration that was supported by the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios (JAE) at the beginning of the 20th century. The JAE provided grants for students to study in Germany. This section also focus on Ortega y Gasset and significant scientists such as Negrín, Marañón and especially Castillejo. The role played by the Residencia de Señoritas and women in this exchange is also told through the profile of some of the female pioneers. The third section presents this cooperation from the German perspective: the scientific boycott of the Entente after World War I created a critical situation for German science that the Notgemeinschaft der deutschen Wissenschaft alleviated. The foreign policy of the Weimar Republic and its particular interest in Spain because of this country's neutrality during the Great War are also presented. The fourth section presents several German scientific institutions created in Spain with the purpose of promoting the cooperation between the two countries, such as the centers of the DAAD and the Görres Institute. The visits of German scientists such as Obermaier, Schulten, Hübner, Schäfer, among others, are described. Albert Einstein's visit to Spain in 1923 deserves special mention. He was conferred a doctor honoris causa by the Universidad Central and was appointed corresponding member of the la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales.

The exhibition follows with an overview of the relations between the two countries during Spain's transition from dictatorship to democracy and concludes with a description of the academic and scientific cooperation through the CSIC, the DAAD and other research centers and foundations that contributed to this effort. The aims of this exhibition are to commemorate a century of institutionalized scientific cooperation beginning with the establishment of the first institutions of the JAE in 1910, to emphasize the relevance and reciprocity of the cooperation in the development of science in both countries, and to reveal some of the lesser known but very significant aspects of this relationship. Last but not least, its purpose is to explore and promote the future prospects of this cooperation.

The exhibition has 26 panels in Spanish and German. It opened on June 18 and will travel to several cities in Spain and Germany.
