The introduction of electronic media in the publishing world has been called digital revolution, a well deserved and fully justified name. It is not a fad or a trend, but a real change in all areas affecting the creation, production, distribution, reproduction, use and consumption of content.
In the case of scientific content, in addition to journals, there are a number of new circumstances that make change even more unavoidable: the enormous proliferation of knowledge, its volatility and its hyper-speed updating requires a medium which can store, publish and distribute, in an equally agile way, the knowledge that scientists expect to find. They are highly specialized people, dispersed, and sensitive to new discoveries, and in many cases, with limited financial means for subscriptions.
The need for a new, more versatile support tailored to the specific needs of specialists in the twenty-first century has been covered by the digital medium. But its use raises many practical, technical, and legal problems, as well as production and consumption habits.
The participants in this seminar will receive a CD-ROM version of the preliminary draft EDICIENCIA: Análisis de la difusión digital de los contenidos científicos en las universidades españolas, con propuesta de un manual de buenas prácticas.
