Emails started thirty years ago and the World Wide Web a decade ago. During this time, technical means developed for scientist exchange have become part of everyday life, and play a huge economic and media role.
For many, these means are creating an Information society; for others, who put more emphasis on the human rather than the technological aspect, the goal is to achieve a Knowledge society. But we live in a pluralistic world, with more than one society or one kind of knowledge. We have a multitude of societies and lots of knowledge, the Knowledge societies. The word "knowledge" applies to that of a physician, a teacher, an organization, a community or an individual.
Technological change has led, as it is well known, to the instant access to content and immediate communication between people. But, are they really contributing to create
a better society? Or are we just increasing noise and dispersion? Communication technologies and information will succeed to the extent that they help to share knowledge, sharing among teachers and students, institutions and citizens, community groups, individuals and cultures.
We want a future of shared knowledge networks and this seminar will explore the potential and achievements in a number of key areas: the new role of individuals in scientific research, the creation of software with a social purpose, the free dissemination of knowledge, collaboration between educational centers, the creation of knowledge in a virtual community, or how the flow of emails represents a flow of relationships.
